Summary

For Elinor Dashwood, sensible and sensitive, and her romantic, impetuous younger sister Marianne, the prospect of marrying the men they love appears remote。 In a world ruled by money and self-interest, the Dashwood sisters have neither fortune nor connections。 Concerned for others and for
social proprieties, Elinor is ill-equipped to compete with self-centred fortune-hunters like Lucy Steele, while Marianne's unswerving belief in the truth of her own feelings makes her more dangerously susceptible to the designs of unscrupulous men。

Through her heroines' parallel experiences of love, loss, and hope, Jane Austen offers a powerful analysis of the ways in which women's lives were shaped by the claustrophobic society in which they had to survive。

I am an Austen fan, but I do not believe that I have read Sense and Sensibility。 I read it。 Discussed it with my college buddies in a seminar and immediately reread it。

Love! Wish there was more interaction between characters。 But still a joyful read。

Classics are always good。Great read love the illustrations。 Jane Austen has written many classics and this is one of the best, enjoy。 This edition is ready to read, and the illustrations add to it。

yeah, similarly to Emma and Persuasion found this underwhelming as compared to the superb Pride & Prejudice。 Think I will lay off the Austen for a while now。。。

I had really liked Pride and Prejudice when I read it many years ago, but I was a little bit disappointed with the (to me) lack of personality of the main character's love interest in Sense and Sensibility。 I had really liked Pride and Prejudice when I read it many years ago, but I was a little bit disappointed with the (to me) lack of personality of the main character's love interest in Sense and Sensibility。 。。。more

Every time I read Austen I come to a new appreciation of some aspect of the story。 In this case, it was Colonel Brandon。 Often in the past he has seemed like a consolation prize to me。 Even the way Austen describes their relationship gives that impression。 But this reading made me appreciate Colonel Brandon's strength and essential decency (or maybe I was just picturing David Morrissey) Either way, it was—as always—a deeply satisfying read。 Every time I read Austen I come to a new appreciation of some aspect of the story。 In this case, it was Colonel Brandon。 Often in the past he has seemed like a consolation prize to me。 Even the way Austen describes their relationship gives that impression。 But this reading made me appreciate Colonel Brandon's strength and essential decency (or maybe I was just picturing David Morrissey) Either way, it was—as always—a deeply satisfying read。 。。。more

What does it mean for one to be 'sensible'? As we are all individuals, with our own needs, is it sensible to always act according to our countenance (as Austen has said), to keep true to ourselves, or is there a sort of manners that we should adhere to in order to maintain a proper course of action? As we are all individuals, with our own needs, is it sensible to always act according to our countenance (as Austen has said), to keep true to ourselves, or is there a sort of manners that we should adhere to in order to maintain a proper course of action? Jane Austen’s first published work, Sense and Sensibility, published in 1811, probes the ideas of its title。The novel follows the three Dashwood sisters as they move with their widowed mother to a meagre cottage on the property of a distant relative, where they experience love, romance, and heartbreak。 The story focuses on two sisters, ages 17 and 19, and how their romantic interests and relationships shape their different approaches to life。 The older sister Elinor personifies sense, good judgment and discretion。 She is a great sister, a trustworthy confidante, someone who always acts with honor and compassion。 She is smart, responsible, and strong。Her sister Marianne on the other hand is emotional and volatile, following her heart with a supreme disregard for what others might think。 She epitomises 'sensibility', her ideas of love are pure romance, and she very much represents how love is perceived by someone who is young or doesn't really have any experience with the many different ways real love makes an appearance。But despite the rediculousness of her ideas of this "perfect man and perfect love" that will forever stamp your soul, I think we all have -at some point in our lives- started out with a little bit of Marrianne in ourselves。 Elinor and Marianne are very different people, and they interact with the world in very different ways, though they each have their values and their flaws, together, they help and look out for each other as sisters should。 As the novel unfolds, they both learn how to express their sentiments fully but moderately with prudence。 In this way, Austen shows the importance of a balance between reason and passion。 The loving sister relationship is one of the best things about this novel。 Nothing melts my heart more than good sibling relationships。 And Elinor and Marianne have each other's backs all the time。 Even though their personalities are different, their love and comforting for each other knows no limits。 I liked how she talked about Marianne in this book。 How illness and heartbreak change her and reshape her into a stronger, less selfish person。 Elinor was to be the comforter of others in her own distresses, no less than in theirs。She never burdens others with her problems, but is always there to comfort and listen to anyone else。 And there were so many things that she could put up with so smoothly and it left me quite astonished, just like the way she dealt with Lucy Steele。 The story by representing this contrast between the two personalities and their way of thinking towards things, suggests that maybe being sensible all the time isn't the best idea, and there needs to be some balance between the two extremes。Jane Austen's works illustrate the habits, customs, and manners of the high English society at that time。 Being set in the late 18th, women had limited roles and opportunities in the society。 They don‘t inherit property or follow careers, but almost exclusively depend on men for future fortune。 They are expected to be dutiful, upstanding ladies of the society。 Now can we just talk about how much money matters were tediously brought up time and again along the story? To the point where I felt the title should've been CENTS AND SENSIBILITY。 All of the main characters are very well-off, but having plenty of money doesn’t seem to stop them from worrying about finances。 All of them are generally very concerned with money, if not greedy。 The novel’s wealthy characters have warped standards for what qualifies as a comfortable life。 Marianne and Elinor are to some degree exceptions to this superficial and annoying pattern, they resist this greed and materialism but not entirely。 They are still extremely concerned with the financial prospects of their respective husbands。 Jane Austen's prose is art, that's indubitable, but the story, in my opinion, is lacking。 Two semi-rich young women do the social dance with men who are alternately gentlemanly or scoundrels, silly reversals and heartbreaks ensue, followed at the end by weddings which are not exactly meant to leave us with the warmest of feelings as many weddings do。 Many of the characters are unlikable and some are downright despicable。The plot itself is anything but complicated, their plots revolve entirely around what boy likes what girl and vice versa, and nothing else ever happens。 They go to a ball, where they worry about which boy isn't dancing with them, they have tea, where they talk about which girls have snagged which boys。 There were pages and pages of "I love this boy! But oh no, he's engaged to someone else!" and "This boy acted like he loved me but it turned out hedidn't and now I am sad and will ignore the other boy who has clearly been meant to marry me all along!"。 I just want the protagonists to do more than worry about who they're going to marry。This is probably why Pride and Prejudice resonated so well with me。Even the ending (which I appreciated a bit), still had left me unconvinced about the book's obvious merits。Now having read "Sense and Sensibility" and comparing to her other works, I can say that it truly does feel like a first novel, as if the author was still trying to find her voice。 But if there is something that stands out beyond the contrasting of all of this, is Austen's observations of the human mind, her cutting social critiques of British society in the 18th/19th centuries are fascinating and beautifully rendered。 Jane Austen’s beautiful language, her witty writing, and the engaging flow made the reading so enjoyable。Sense and Sensibility however is more than just about romance。 It addresses many other deeper issues such as vanity, self-realization, class difference, and human nature。 。。。more

A novel about love, money, personal attitude, and social position。 While the romances (and male characters) were stilted and the ending rather unsatisfying, the book was ultimately about the evolving and loving relationship between the two sisters。 Btw, I think it would make much more sense (ha!) for Colonel Brandon to have fallen in love with the mother (Mrs。 Dashwood), much more his contemporary in age and having a bearing like Marianne, and THAT'S a romance I'd really like to read about。 A novel about love, money, personal attitude, and social position。 While the romances (and male characters) were stilted and the ending rather unsatisfying, the book was ultimately about the evolving and loving relationship between the two sisters。 Btw, I think it would make much more sense (ha!) for Colonel Brandon to have fallen in love with the mother (Mrs。 Dashwood), much more his contemporary in age and having a bearing like Marianne, and THAT'S a romance I'd really like to read about。 。。。more
